A Zimbabwean man based in Australia has won a landmark case in New South Wales after the Local Court ordered two lawyers to pay him more than $108,000 for misleading conduct and breaches of professional duty.
On 9 December 2025, the Lithgow Local Court ruled in favour of Misheck Mukonoweshuro, awarding him $108,311 inclusive of costs against solicitor Michael John Vaughan and his associate James Conomos.
Mukonoweshuro, who migrated from Zimbabwe to Australia, had accused the pair of falsely representing Conomos as a senior counsel and charging him $8,500 for services he never received. In his statement of claim, he detailed how Vaughan and Conomos misled him, failed to provide a written costs agreement, and breached both the Australian Consumer Law and the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW).
The court heard that Mukonoweshuro was left to hire other barristers at significant personal expense after losing confidence in the defendants. He argued that their conduct not only undermined his defence in a criminal matter but also caused him financial and emotional harm.
Registrar N. Roy entered judgment in Mukonoweshuro’s favour, marking a decisive victory for the plaintiff.
