Preparations for the long awaited Zimbabwe International Women Awards (ZIWAs) tickets are now underway marking the second class of the recognition of outstanding Zimbabwean women globally. This year's glitz and glamor award ceremony will be held on the 3rd of October 2015 in Birmingham UK at an exclusive location yet to be announced as logistics are still underway. Founded in 2013 by Juliana Jonathan and Maud Goba with the aim of celebrating unsung Zimbabwean women across the globe who are making exceptional strides and inspiring success in their respective fields, the awards have created and maintained their reputation to the name with many recipients profoundly esteeming the recognitions .
"A lot of Zimbabwean women are of exceptional resilience and integrity, making immense contribution and difference not only within our communities but on a regional, continental and global scale and its only right that we annually pool their nomination and accord them the honor they deserve", said the boss lady Juliana Jonathan.
Now an annual ceremony and being hosted in the UK again this year though the host domicile by no means pose a limitation to the full involvement of Zimbabwean women across the globe. Last year, viewers from around the world, and particularly in Zimbabwe, were able to tune in and watch the ceremony through free online live streaming byZimbolive TV. Unending support by Zimbabweans in the UK community was visible through the oversubscribed attendance as Maud Goba recalls,
"The tickets sold out, we had to ask the hotel for extra tables, and some women were willing to stand throughout the actual ceremony. I encourage Zimbabwean women and men alike to grace us this year as we are planning this to be the biggest year-to-year gathering to celebrate Zimbabwean women globally", she exclaimed.
A number of Zimbabwean businesses also showed their support through their lucrative sponsorships, whilst prominent Zimbabwean artists including the Free to Worship and Tendai Nelson graced the event with sterling performances. Arguably it can be asserted that the essence of ZIWA transcends beyond the ceremony, it is a way of bringing Zimbabwean women together and birthing networking opportunities. ZIWA has not gone without facing criticism and being labelled an ‘elitist'on the nomination process. The ZIWA team has taken constructive criticism on board; community researchers have been appointed in order to assist in discovering women who are making an impact in the community who are not necessarily ‘popular' especially through, for example, social media. It is important to note that ZIWA is dependent on the wider Zimbabwean community from the four corners of the earth to nominate these sheros. The 2015, nomination process proved to be a success, through the active involvement of Zimbabweans across the globe. An external nominations panel, with an external moderator has been appointed and the shortlisted nominations are set to be released on Monday the 10th of August 2015.
