Prisoner sodomises fellow inmate

A 39-year-old inmate at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, Brian Shereni, has been charged with sodomy after allegedly assaulting a fellow prisoner in his cell. The incident reportedly took place on October 29, when Shereni is said to have taken advantage of his sleeping cellmate.

Appearing before Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa last Thursday, Shereni faced charges of sodomy. According to prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, Shereni shared Cell E with the complainant, who was reportedly asleep and naked at the time of the alleged attack.

Shereni allegedly assaulted the complainant, who woke up with a sharp pain in his back as he was being sexually assaulted. The complainant screamed for help, prompting other inmates to come to his aid.

The sexual abuse was immediately reported to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), and a police report was filed following the incident.

Magistrate Gofa has since remanded Shereni in custody, and the case continues to be investigated.
