A MAN from Bulawayo's Pumula South suburb died after being stabbed by an unknown assailant who is still at large.
Ndumiso Moyo was stabbed thrice at about 9.30PM near Mandwandwe Secondary School in Nkulumane on Tuesday. He died at around 1.30AM on Wednesday at Mpilo Central Hospital where he had been admitted.
His becomes the fifth murder case to be recorded in the city in seven days.
Residents said they heard him screaming for help as his attacker plunged the knife into his right cheek, left armpit and leg, but no one was brave enough to go outside and assist him.
A Nkulumane resident, Tarisai Gambiza, said she saw a bloodied Moyo lying on the road near his home minutes after he heard him screaming.
"We first heard him wailing saying 'bantu ngincedani ngiyafa mina'. We were scared to go out and help him as we are just women in the house. We couldn't do anything but watch through the window," she said.
Gambiza said they only came out of the house after a passerby knocked on their gate and asked them to help the wounded Moyo.
"A man knocked at our gate shouting 'bantu ngekhaya alimuzwa yini umuntu uyafa'. That is when we got the guts to come out of the house and started mobilising neighbours to assist him. An ambulance was called and the injured man was rushed to hospital," said Gambiza.
She said they later realised that they had seen Moyo drunk, earlier.
"It was just before 8PM and he was making noise asking about the whereabouts of a certain man. He sounded drunk and threw stones at my children. When we heard him cry for help we couldn't decide whether he was genuine or just wanted to draw us out of the house to rob us," said Gambiza.
Thubelihle Sibanda, who resides at the same house with Gambiza, said other residents may have ignored Moyo's cries because thugs use various means to trick people and residents could have thought it was one of ruses used by robbers.
The pair said they suspected Moyo's assailants could have come with him from the nearby Airport beer garden.
Chronicle caught up with a person who was at the beer hall at the time. He said Moyo could have been attacked by a man who was selling knives at the bar.
"There was a man who was selling two kitchen knives. He was drunk and picking fights with almost everyone in the bar. I suspect he is the one who stabbed him," said the man who requested anonymity.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Insp Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.
"We have received yet another murder report. A man was stabbed in Nkulumane and later died at Mpilo Central Hospital," he said.
Insp Moyo expressed gratitude to the members of the public for reporting the case.
"We urge the public to continue working with the police to fight crime. Following these murder cases police have intensified campaigns against violence in the city," he said.
