AN eye for an eye!
This Biblical scripture was at play when a man from Selbourne Park in Bulawayo injured his neighbour's wife's eye with a brick as revenge for a crime committed by her husband some years back when he plucked off his eye with a log during a fistfight.
The "super" revenge case was heard when Nephion Sibindi (26) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mrs Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze charged with assault. Sibindi did not waste the court's time when he pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 24 months in prison of which six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behavior.
The remainder of 18 months was further suspended on condition that he completes 525 hours of community service at Hillside Police Station.
In mitigation Sibindi, the father of three begged for mercy saying when he committed the offence it was by "mistake".
"Your Worship may you please forgive me. I did not commit the offence intentionally, it was by mistake that I hit the complainant's right eye with a brick which I had directed to her husband who also damaged my eye with a log some years back. What happened is that I missed my target and hit the complainant's eye," he said.
The court heard that on 1 March the complainant Sehliselo Dube (48) was walking with her husband along Mtshumayeli Road in Selbourne Park when they met the accused who started an altercation saying he wanted his eye back which the complainant's husband plucked off with a log some years back.
It is reported that at the height of the argument the accused picked up a brick and hit the complainant on the left eye and subsequently injured it. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused. The injured complainant was referred to hospital for medication and a medical report was produced in court as exhibit.
