A MUTARE man's bid to escape paying maintenance for his three children hit a brick wall last week after he was ordered to contribute $340 monthly towards their upkeep by a Mutare magistrate.
Manica Post reported that Isaac Njuga(40) who had stated that he had nothing to offer his children and that he wanted to hand them over to his parents who were according to him financially stable was left startled after he was ordered to fork out $340 monthly for his children.
This was after he was dragged to the maintenance court by his estranged wife, Nyasha Mavhiza Njuga, who described him as a drunkard and negligent father who ignored the needs of his offspring despite the fact that he was financially stable.
She said:"When we were still staying together he would buy a loaf of bread and say that it was enough to eat for a whole week.
"Your Worship, we separated late last year and by then he was managing a farm, renting out barns at the farm and also operating a grocery shop at the farm. He should offer something for his children."
She was claiming $600 for the upkeep of their three children.
Asked on what he was offering his children, Njuga said:" Your Worship, I am not employed and I actually stay with my parents. What I can do is take the children and give them to my parents. They have promised to look after them for me."
Venencia Mugota presided over the matter.
"Being a 40-year-old father of three and having the audacity to stand in court and telling us that you want your parents to look after the children that you fathered when you are still alive, you should be ashamed of yourself.
"However, if you still insist that your father has promised to take care of your children, go and tell him to take care of them while they are with their parent who is their mother," said Mugota.
Njuga was ordered to pay $340 monthly to his estranged wife towards the upkeep of the three minor children.
