BULAWAYO - A Pumula South woman has been arrested for allegedly possessing 59kilogrammes of marijuana (mbanje) with a street value of about US$6 000.
Elizabeth Masekesa, of 13358 Pumula South was arrested on Thursday last week when detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Drugs Section in Bulawayo received a tip-off from members of the public.
Police conducted a surveillance of her house and on one of the days she left the house carrying a black bag, which had two plastic bags full of marijuana (mbanje) .
The police searched her house and found the illicit drug weighing 59kg. Masekesa has claimed the marijuana (mbanje) belonged to her husband and the bag, which she was carrying at the time of her arrest, also belonged to her husband who had sent her to give it to someone.
She was arraigned before Bulawayo regional magistrate Godwin Sengweni to answer to a charge of possessing marijuana (mbanje) .The police literally put her house under surveillance to watch her movements and at about 4pm on 17 November she left her house carrying
a black travelling bag.
The court heard that she went straight to the bus top and boarded a kombi and dropped off at the inter-section of Intemba Road and Hyde Park Road, with detectives closely watching her. The police requested to search her bag and recovered two plastic bags with marijuana (mbanje). Masekesa then led the detectives to her house for further search where they recovered the 59kg of the drug in the
toilet.
She was arrested and taken to the CID Drugs and Narcotics Department where the marijuana (mbanje) was weighed. It weighed 59kgs with a street value of US$5 900. Masekesa told the court that she did not know anything about the contents of the bag she was found carrying as her husband had sent her
to give it to somebody.
She claimed the police or her husband might have put the bags that were found in the toilet because when she left the house the bags were not there.
Mr Goodluck Katenaire appeared for the state.
