Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in Harare have started dispensing newly upgraded Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) banknotes following their official rollout on Tuesday.
Customers at several banks, including a branch in Borrowdale, were among the first to access the new ZiG10 and ZiG20 denominations, marking the initial phase of the updated currency's circulation through ATM systems.
The redesigned notes feature enhanced security elements, improved durability, and updated design features intended to align with international currency standards. Despite the introduction of the new series, older ZiG notes will remain in use and will be phased out gradually over time.
In a statement, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) said higher denominations such as ZiG100 and ZiG200 will be introduced progressively, depending on transactional demand and prevailing monetary conditions.
The central bank also confirmed that ZiG coins, introduced in April 2024, remain in circulation and continue to support small-value transactions alongside the banknotes.
According to the RBZ, the rollout of higher denominations will be carefully managed to ensure stability in the domestic monetary system while supporting everyday cash usage across the economy.
