Hospitality industry players in Bulawayo say they are fully prepared to host visitors for this year's Zimbabwe International Trade Fair 2026, with most hotels and lodges reporting near full to full bookings.
The exhibition will run from April 20 to 25 at the Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City under the theme "Connected Economies, Competitive Industries."
Industry stakeholders confirmed strong demand for accommodation, driven by the convergence of major events, including the Zimbabwe Independence Day commemorations set to take place in Maphisa, about 118 kilometres from the city.
Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) Bulawayo representative Grace Guchu-Nkomo said preparations are progressing well, with major hotels already fully booked.
"The current situation in terms of preparedness after our meeting seems to be positive with the two prime events happening, the ZITF and Independence. The three major hotels in the city are fully booked, while lodges and guest houses are also reporting strong bookings," she said.
She noted that operators are now awaiting final payments from clients, indicating firm demand across the sector.
However, the industry has appealed to service providers, particularly ZESA, to ensure stable power supply during the busy period, while also calling on local authorities to address road infrastructure concerns.
"The plea is for leniency on power cuts as we will be hosting guests from all over. While main road works are appreciated, smaller access roads still need attention," Guchu-Nkomo added.
Concerns have also emerged over rising accommodation costs, with some visitors reporting steep price increases due to high demand. Rates at certain lodges are said to range from over US$120 to as much as US$300 per night. However, HAZ says no formal complaints have been submitted.
Meanwhile, small business leaders are encouraging entrepreneurs to take advantage of the increased economic activity during the trade fair.
Bulawayo Chamber of SMEs vice chairperson Sithabile Bhebhe urged micro, small and medium enterprises to capitalise on the influx of visitors by offering goods and services across various sectors.
"There will be a lot of activity in the city during the ZITF week. This is an opportunity for MSMEs to showcase their products and reach a wider market," she said.
Former HAZ representative Fungai Mutseyekwa also confirmed that establishments are ready to deliver quality service to delegates attending both events.
Business leaders say the trade fair remains a key platform for companies to engage investors, policymakers and clients, while also providing emerging enterprises with valuable exposure and growth opportunities.
