Farmers in Mhondoro, Mashonaland West Province, have been urged to prioritise drought‑tolerant crops as climate change continues to threaten food security.

Speaking at a field day held at Faith Panganai's homestead in St Michaels, Mhondoro, Zadzamatura Senior Agronomist Blessing Hatidane said farmers must adapt to changing weather patterns to avoid hunger.

"We should always work towards food security as farmers. Due to climate change, farmers should grow drought‑tolerant crops," Hatidane said.

He encouraged farmers to consider the drought‑tolerant varieties offered by Zadzamatura.

"It is important for farmers to consider the drought‑tolerant varieties we are offering because they are climate‑smart. This maximises yields even with poor rainfall," he added.

Hatidane also urged farmers to take farming seriously as a business and aim for maximum profits.

Zadzamatura Agronomist for Mashonaland West, Thulani Kuziya, echoed the call, urging farmers to grow small grains to mitigate hunger.

"Farmers, please consider our small grains like millet, sunflower and sorghum. They will help us mitigate drought," he said.

Agritex officer for Mhondoro Ward 3, Freddy Anontio Makumbe, praised Panganai for following agronomic advice and excelling in her ward.

"We are here for this field day because this farmer followed instructions and she is the best. She has been weaned from ward level to provincial level," he said.

Panganai encouraged women to take farming seriously.

"I want to urge women to take farming as a business. From this field, I am expecting more than 17 tonnes. Women should venture into farming, but it requires focus," she said.

Chief Murambwa, who attended the event, urged villagers to prioritise food production.

"This is a Pfumvudza programme. We should learn to produce our own food as villagers. After producing for your family, produce for resale, then for export. That is how we end hunger," he said.

The event was attended by various government departments and institutions.
