The Zimbabwe African Peoples Union learns with regret and sorrow of the passing on of Cde Cephas Msipa, one of former ZAPU luminaries who succumbed to illness this morning in Harare. Dr Msipa, reportedly, passed on at West End Clinic where he was admitted.
Dr Cephas Msipa played a very important role in ZAPU during the liberation struggle for Zimbabwe's independence. His leadership also saw him assuming the mediator role that eventually led to the signing of the 1987 Unity Accord when the country went through a dark chapter in its infancy when Robert Mugabe's ZANU embarked on a mission to decimate and annihilate ZAPU in what became to be the Gukurahundi Genocide.
Dr Msipa's warm relationship with Robert Mugabe during the infamous moment of madness made the negotiations much easier for the under siege ZAPU leadership and The Mother Party today appreciates and cherishes Dr Msipa's efforts of that time. It was his concerted efforts to peaceful solutions to conflict that saved lives of millions who were predominantly ZAPU supporters.
Dr Msipa, when he joined government brought value to the ministries he worked in. His stint as Midlands Governor saw upliftment of peoples lives, especially in the Midlands province as he was a people oriented leader, a rare attribute of all those who came through ZAPU ranks.
When time to retire came, Dr Msipa did not wait to be pushed out but voluntarily hanged his political garments and cap, another of the rare attributes of former ZAPU cadres. He led from the front and also led by example by promoting leadership renewal and change.
As we mourn the departure of a hero, we take comfort in lessons he leaves behind, those of straight forward leadership that is brave and articulate. Dr Msipa was brave and honest enough to remind Robert Mugabe that he needed to retire and hand over leadership of the country to the younger generation who had both capacity and passion to see the country through its current mismanagement induced problems.
We wish Cde Msipa peaceful rest that is eternal, while we pass our heartfelt condolences to his family and nation. The country has lost a pillar especially in areas of peace building and harmonious co-existence.
May His Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.
