Bus accident declared state of disaster

President Robert Mugabe has declared the Nyamakate bus accident which has claimed 43 lives, a state of disaster.
The declaration was made in terms of section 27 (i) of the Civil Protection Act (chapter 10.06) of 1989 and this entails the provision of US$200 dollars for the burial of each of the deceased.
The Acting President, Emmerson Mnangagwa also sent a condolence message to families of the 43 people who perished in the road accident.
In his message, Mnangagwa said on behalf of His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Mugabe, he expresses government's sympathies to families who lost their beloved ones in the accident.
President Mugabe is in New York, USA attending a UN conference.
The acting president also wished speedy recovery to all those injured, adding that the escalation in road accidents might force the government to re-examine night travel by public transport operators.
The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Saviour Kasukuwere and Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Minister Faber Chidarike visited survivors of the bus disaster at Chinhoyi Hospital and revealed that the government will also offer state assistance to survivors of the horror crash.
Minister Chidarikire further called for a policy to ban cross border busses from travelling during the night.
Survivors of the disaster said the bus was speeding and overloaded, adding that the driver, who died in the accident ignored several calls by pasengers for him to reduce speed.
People with relatives travelling with the ill-fated bus are being requested to visit Chinhoyi Hospital mortuary to help identify the deceased.
