MDC-T deputy secretary general Tapiwa Mashakada has mourned the death of a founding member and unionist Abisha Nyanguwo who died on Wednesday.
"Some individuals who really make positive contributions to a cause are never celebrated because they are not well known in public. This can be said about the late Abisha Nyanguwo a veteran trade unionist and MDC technocrat who passed on 3 days ago. I first met Abisha in the early 1990s when he was President of the Post and Telecommunications Workers Union with Gift Chimanikire as Secretary General," he said.
"Under Abisha's leadership workers in the PTC sector enjoyed the most coveted conditions of service in Zimbabwe. He advanced, promoted and defended workers rights. He then took a study leave to go and pursue his post graduate studies in England. When he returned back he imported his black luxury ford sierra limosine and I tell you Abisha became the talk in town because those days the best cars in Zim were toyota cressidas, datsun, peugeot or mazda. We didnt have toyotas in Zimbabwe back then."
He said this fame suited him well as he was a smart and flamboyant man with is golden tooth.
"He later moved to join us at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions where he worked hard to advise the leadership on strategic planning and project management. He later on left the ZCTU to head the secretariat of SATUC in Botswana. Satuc is the Southern African Trade Union Council. After the end of his tour of duty he returned at the right time when we were forming the MDC. He rose in the MDC Secretariat to become the Chief of Staff in the President's Office," he said.
"You cannot get such a position if you are not trustworthy, solid and honest. After the 2014 congress there was restructuring and he was moved to Director of Policy and Research a position he held until his untimely death. He was a family man staying in the leafy Harare surbub of Sentosa. We used to enjoy drinks at the Mabelreign Sports Club or the Bronte. The MDC family has lost one of its brilliant senior member of staff. A great thinker, technocrat. Fare thee well my bro."
