A Bulawayo activist has won the 2018 African Union Theme of the year hashtag competition.

African Union's department of political affairs announced Paul Sixpence on Tuesday morning through a micro-blogging site, Twitter.

"Announcing the 2018 AU Theme of the Year Hashtag, #AfricaAgainstCorruption. Thank you to all the contributors and congratulations to @PaulSixpence for the winning entry."

An elated Sixpence took to Facebook to celebrate his success.

"My entry for the African Union (UN) theme of the year #AfricaAgainstCorruption has been selected as the winning entry by the African Union Department of Political Affairs."

The African Union launched 2018 as the African Anti-Corruption year during its 30th Assembly of Head of States and Government held in Addis Ababa in January this year.

The theme for fighting corruption is "Winning the fight against corruption: A sustainable path to Africa's transformation."

The deliberate move to declare 2018 as the African Anti-Corruption year came after the realization by African head of states and governments that "corruption continues to hamper efforts aimed at promoting democratic governance, socio economic transformation, peace and security as well as the enjoyment of human rights in the AU member states.

As a member of the AU, Zimbabwe is one of the 39 countries which parties to the AU Convention on Preventing and combating corruption.
