Mnangagwa returns home to commission Kariba South expansion project

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is back home after attending the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.
The forum ended last night.
President Mnangagwa was met at the Robert Mugabe International Airport this morning by Vice President Kembo Mohadi, the Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, Miriam Chikukwa, service chiefs and senior government officials.
Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa is set to commission the Kariba South Hydro Power Station Expansion Project In Kariba today.
The $533 million expansion project has added 2 more units or generators, generator 7 and generator 8, each with a capacity to generate 150mw, meaning the two units are expected to add 300mw to the national grid.
Unit 7 was commissioned towards the end of December adding 150 megawatts to the national grid with Unit 8 generating an additional 150 megawatts set to be commissioned today.
The existing Kariba South Power Station has an installed capacity of 750 megawatts and the coming to the grid of the two units will add 300 megawatts to a total of 1 050 megawatts thereby reducing power deficit.
Zimbabwe had been experiencing power shortages with a deficit of up to 600 megawatts which were being sourced from regional power utilities which include Eskom of South Africa, Caho-bassa of Mozambique and SNEL of DRC, forcing the nation to spend between $7 million and $10 million weekly.
The Kariba South expansion programme is part of government's infrastructure and utilities cluster under ZIM ASSET.
