A HIGHLANDS woman has appeared in court accused of spitting saliva on the policewoman's face.

Ntombizodwa Topera, 42, of No. 9 Glenshire Road, Highlands pleaded not guilty to assault charges and obstructing the course of justice before Chitungwiza magistrate Blessing Murwisi.

The State, led by Norman Koropi, alleges that on May 29 last year around 3pm, the policewoman was manning a roadblock with fellow officers at Chaminuka Road near St Mary's Police Station.

According to the State, the accused person arrived at the roadblock in a vehicle (registration number ADF872) occupying the passenger's seat.

It is the State's case that one of the police officers asked for a driver's licence but the one driving the car failed to produce it.

As the constable was inspecting the vehicle, he discovered that the vehicle had no vehicle licence, headlight, fire extinguisher and breakdown triangles.

Koropi told magistrate Murwisi that when the constable discovered the aforementioned snags, he told the driver to pay fine of $30 for the offences.

The constable further directed the driver to ZRP St Mary's premises as he wanted to verify with CVR if he was a holder of a driver's licence.

The problem started when the accused person sat on the driver's seat indicating that the vehicle was going nowhere and told the police officers that she cannot be arrested by mere constables.

It was heard in court that the accused person told the police officers that she is highly connected to senior police officers and threatened that they risked losing their jobs.

After denying arrest the accused person spitted at a police woman before pushing her three times and fell down on her back.

The matter will be back in court on April 19 for trial continuation.
