The Bulawayo City Council says communities across the city on Friday participated in the National Clean‑Up Campaign held under the theme, "A plastic‑free environment is possible – play your part".

According to the local authority, the exercise attracted participation from municipal workers, churches, private sector organisations, Government departments, residents from various wards and school pupils.

The council said the campaign demonstrated a collective commitment to maintaining cleanliness and promoting environmental responsibility across the city.

"Municipal staff, churches, private sector organisations, Government departments, residents from various wards and pupils participated in the National Clean‑Up Campaign," the council said.

Bulawayo City Council expressed concern over continued littering and illegal dumping in parts of the city despite regular refuse collection efforts.

"Littering remains one of the challenges affecting the city and residents are encouraged to use litter bins instead of throwing waste on the ground," the council noted.

The local authority also warned against illegal dumping, saying some residents and stakeholders were still disposing of waste at undesignated sites.

"The city is also concerned that, despite its efforts to consistently collect refuse, some residents and stakeholders continue to engage in illegal dumping," the statement read.

Council said the National Clean‑Up Campaign reinforces the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

"The National Clean‑Up Campaign reaffirms that maintaining a clean environment is a shared national responsibility and demonstrates how we can collectively contribute to keeping Bulawayo, the City of Kings, clean," the council said.

The local authority urged all residents to play their part in keeping the city clean at all times, aligning with broader Zimbabwe environmental stewardship efforts.
