A HARARE police officer, who on Monday appeared at the Rusape Magistrates Court charged with stealing foodstuffs donated to victims of Cyclone Idai in Manicaland, has been granted $200 bail and remanded to April 29.

Edward Dhumukwa (32), of Belvedere in Harare, was arrested while on a Harare-bound bus last week following a tip-off.

In granting him bail, Rusape magistrate Patience Madondo said Dhumukwa, who was represented by Taurai Khupe of Khupe Law Chambers, should continue to stay at his given address, report every fortnight at Chikurubi Police Station and not interfere with State witnesses until finalisation of the matter.

It is the State's case that Dhumukwa and his two accomplices, who are still at large, stole donated goods worth $10 000 meant for victims of Cyclone Idai in Chipinge and Chimanimani, and loaded the loot on a Harare-bound bus.

The suspect is said to have committed the crime between April 1 and 3 while he was manning the Silverstream base, where he was deployed to guard the donated goods.

Evelyn Dhliwayo represented the State.
