PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa says the splitting of the former Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion into two separate ministries will strengthen macroeconomic management while accelerating investment and industrial growth.
The Finance Ministry will now operate independently under Minister Mthuli Ncube, while the newly separated Ministry of Economic Development and Investment Promotion will focus on attracting investment and driving economic transformation.
President Mnangagwa yesterday swore in Senator Kudakwashe Regimond Tagwirei as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion at State House in Harare, following the restructuring of the two portfolios.
The President said the move was intended to establish clearly defined mandates and leadership structures to advance Zimbabwe's economic development agenda.
"This follows our strategic decision to split the former Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion into two dedicated portfolios.
"By creating two distinct ministries with clearly defined mandates and leadership, we are sharpening our focus on robust macroeconomic management while aggressively driving investment and industrial growth.
"Together, we continue to build a stronger, more resilient economy for all Zimbabweans," he said.
Speaking to journalists after his swearing-in, Tagwirei thanked Mnangagwa for appointing him to serve in Government, saying his immediate priority would be to mobilise domestic investment and foreign direct investment (FDI).
He said his mandate would be to ensure that investment initiatives align with the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), while securing funding for Government projects through commercial and fiscal channels.
"In essence, my role will be to look at the economic objectives of the National Development Strategy 2, the 10 pillars of the National Development Strategy, and ensure that the economic side of it is aligned to that of NDS2, but also to bring capital to Zimbabwe, to ensure that the Government projects (being implemented) are funded commercially and others are funded through fiscal," he said.
Tagwirei said attracting both local and foreign capital would be critical to achieving the country's development objectives.
"My role will be to bring in capital into Zimbabwe, foreign and local, to make sure that those objectives are met, and that's what I'm hoping I'm going to be doing," he said.
However, he said he was yet to meet the President to receive further direction on his responsibilities and outlined priorities for the new ministry.
