ECONET Wireless has urged subscribers to strengthen their WhatsApp account security amid growing threats from hackers and social engineering scams targeting mobile users.

The telecommunications company encouraged customers to activate WhatsApp Passkeys and two-step verification to reduce the risk of account hijacking and improve recovery options if their accounts are compromised.

"We once again urge customers to protect themselves by proactively securing their WhatsApp accounts by selecting the login and security settings on their WhatsApp profile, and enabling WhatsApp Passkeys, as well as activating the two-step authentication on their account," an Econet spokesperson said.

The company said it had been using multiple communication channels to educate subscribers on measures they can take to safeguard their accounts.

Econet advised users to activate two-step verification by setting a six-digit PIN and adding a recovery email address. Subscribers were also urged never to share verification codes or security PINs with anyone, regardless of the identity the person claims to represent.

The company further encouraged customers to regularly review devices linked to their WhatsApp accounts and remove any unfamiliar devices, while keeping the application updated with the latest software releases and security patches.

Subscribers were also warned against unauthorised call forwarding, dialling unverified codes beginning with a star (*), and scanning unknown QR codes or WhatsApp pairing codes displayed on unfamiliar websites and devices.

Econet urged users to log out of WhatsApp Web sessions they no longer use and remain cautious of messages designed to create panic or urgency, particularly those requesting confidential information.

The company also advised subscribers to avoid suspicious links, even when they appear to originate from people they know.

Customers were encouraged to verify requests for money, account details or verification codes by calling the purported sender directly before taking any action.
