AN employee of a company sub-contracted to upgrade Beitbridge Border Post, Raubex (Pvt) Ltd has been accused of smuggling cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa.

This came to light when South African Police Service (Saps) officers at the weekend fired shots at a Raubex vehicle after they suspected that it was involved in smuggling activities.

The unnamed driver was forced to flee on foot, leaving the vehicle which was carrying Zimbabwean-manufactured cigarettes.

Saps had not yet responded to media questions at the time of going to print.

Raubex human resources officer in Beitbridge Paballo Muleya yesterday said he was not comfortable speaking to journalists.

However, it is alleged that Raubex employees, mostly South Africans have been driving to Beitbridge on a daily basis, taking advantage of the company's involvement in the renovation of the border post, where they would smuggle cigarettes which are on demand in the neighbouring country.

Raubex was hired by Zimborders to upgrade the Beitbridge Border Post.  The US$300 million project is now 70% complete.
