The United Kingdom government has appointed former ambassador to Zimbabwe, Peter Vowles, as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The appointment was announced by the UK government on Tuesday, with Vowles expected to assume his new role in Abuja in September 2026.

He will succeed Richard Montgomery, who will remain in office until Vowles formally takes up the position.

Vowles brings extensive diplomatic and international development experience to one of the United Kingdom's most significant diplomatic postings in Africa.

He most recently served as His Majesty's Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026 and previously held the position of British Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

Throughout his career, Vowles has occupied several senior leadership positions within the UK's diplomatic and development institutions, including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID).

His previous responsibilities included serving as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

Before entering senior diplomatic leadership, Vowles worked extensively in international development programmes across Africa and Asia, undertaking assignments in countries including Bangladesh, India, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya.

Notably, he began his professional career in Zimbabwe, where he worked in education and development programmes before joining the British diplomatic service.

Commenting on his appointment, Vowles expressed his enthusiasm about strengthening relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

"I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria," he said.

"Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security."

Nigeria is one of the United Kingdom's most important partners in Africa, with strong economic, diplomatic and cultural ties linking the two countries. The High Commission in Abuja plays a central role in advancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, security, governance, education and development.

Vowles' appointment comes as the UK continues to deepen engagement with Africa's largest economy and most populous nation, while also seeking to strengthen partnerships across the continent in support of economic growth, regional stability and shared development goals.
