Trust Chikohora, the leader of the opposition Zimbabwe Coalition for Peace and Development (ZCPD), has expressed skepticism about the new Cabinet that was sworn in earlier this week. He believes the Cabinet faces significant challenges in addressing the economic issues plaguing the country.
Chikohora stated, "We wait to see the new policies that will come out of the new Cabinet. We also wait to see how progressive those policies will be and whether the new Cabinet will be able to tackle the myriad of challenges facing the Zimbabwe economy and whether the lives of people will be improved by this new Cabinet."
The opposition leader, based in Gweru, emphasized the importance of stabilizing the economy by addressing hyperinflation. He added, "The Cabinet has to make sure the economy is stabilized on a sustainable basis, make sure the currency and prices on the market are stabilized, and that inflation is reined in to single-digit levels. They have to make sure that both foreign direct investment and local investment are realized in the country if Vision 2030 of being an upper-middle-income economy is to be achieved."
President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a 26-member Cabinet on Monday, which included some of his loyalists and relatives. Chikohora expressed concern about the presence of Mnangagwa's relatives in the government, considering it unusual and not in line with best practices for good governance.
Mnangagwa stated that his new Cabinet would continue with the developmental projects initiated by the previous government.
