GMAZ begins processes to import maize

Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe has begun processes to import maize both from the Southern African region and Black seas.
In a statement GMAZ chaiperson Dr Tafadzwa Musarara said all the requisite processes are being followed.
"GMAZ has now begun all their requisite processes to import maize both from the Southern African region and the Black Seas.
We are pleased to advise the country that the current maize stocks exceed demand and consumers are assured of availability of their favourite maize meal brands from their nearest retail shops," reads part of the statement.
Private companies can now import maize without paying duty as part of the extra precautions being taken to ensure that the possible lower rainfall this season as a result of an El Nino will not lead to a point of inadequate grains stocks.
The announcement of the tax concession was made when the Government was announcing the 2023/24 incentive planning production prices of traditional grains, maize, soyabeans and sunflower.
Dr Musarara also said prices of maize meal will continue to be held during this forthcoming festive season.
See statement below:
The grain milling industry welcomes the latest joint policy pronouncement by Honorable Ministers of Agriculture and Finance on the 2023/4 grain marketing arrangements and, among others, the full resumption of maize imports by millers.
We applaud Government for its proactiveness by committing to climate proof farming methods, re-introducing pre-planting pricing in order to attract capital and allowing the full resumption of maize imports so that millers shore up their stocks considering the worsening effects of global warming on agriculture and the deteriorating geo-politics. The anticipated El Nino induced drought that now confronts us has the potency to impact negatively on the country's grain yield.
