A 31-year-old Bulawayo man is facing a culpable homicide charge after allegedly assaulting a fellow patron at a beer garden, resulting in injuries that later proved fatal.

Clyde Gakava of Lobengula West appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Pasipanodya Maturure in connection with the death of Themba Moyo.

Gakava, who is out on bail, was remanded to June 19 for the continuation of his trial.

Prosecutor Melissa Dube told the court that the incident occurred at Esiqongweni Beer Garden on April 9, 2026, at around 7:30am.

According to the State, Gakava allegedly assaulted Moyo by repeatedly punching him in the face before striking him on the head with an iron bar during an altercation.

The court heard that Moyo fell to the ground during the assault and struck the back of his head on the floor.

Despite sustaining injuries, Moyo reportedly travelled to Esigodini, where he was employed, and continued with his normal activities.

However, his condition is said to have worsened in the days that followed.

Moyo died on April 22, 2026, at Bheki Mine in Esikhoveni, Umzingwane, nearly two weeks after the alleged assault.

The prosecution contends that the injuries sustained during the attack led to Moyo's death.

The trial is continuing.
