The National University of Science and Technology (Nust) has announced a venue change for its upcoming 30th graduation ceremony, moving the event from the university campus to the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) due to the onset of heavy rains.
Mr. Thabani Mpofu, Nust's Director of Communications and Marketing, confirmed that the decision was made in response to the expected weather complications that could potentially disrupt proceedings at the university's outdoor venue.
"The move was necessitated by the current heavy rains expected to persist until the end of the week," Mr. Mpofu explained. "We have moved to a bigger, indoor space where graduates and attendees can be comfortably accommodated."
The graduation ceremony will now take place at ZIEC Hall 4, providing a safer and more controlled environment to ensure the comfort and safety of the graduates and attendees.
In a notable addition to the event, the ceremony will begin with the commissioning of the late Professor Phineas Makhurane Technovation Centre on campus. This moment will be officiated by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also expected to cap a total of 3,201 graduates.
This year's ceremony will mark a significant milestone for Nust, as it celebrates the first cohort of graduates under the Education 5.0 curriculum. The event will be held under the theme: "Celebrating Innovative Future Ready First Graduates of the Heritage-Based 5.0."
Mr. Mpofu emphasized that the venue change was crucial in light of potential weather challenges that could otherwise diminish the celebratory atmosphere of the event. The decision ensures that the ceremony can take place smoothly, without interruptions from rain or extreme heat, which could affect the outdoor venue.
"The move to ZIEC will provide a more controlled environment that enhances the experience for everyone involved," he added. "This venue, which is well-equipped for large gatherings, also allows us to accommodate a larger audience, so families and friends can celebrate the achievements of their loved ones."
Despite the venue change, the timing of the ceremony remains unaffected, and graduates will gather at the originally planned time. The ceremony will proceed according to the scheduled programme, ensuring that all logistical arrangements, including seating, audio-visual equipment, and safety protocols, are in place.
Nust remains committed to providing a memorable graduation experience for its students, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Mr. Mpofu reassured attendees that the university would ensure all necessary measures are taken to comply with any health regulations that may still be in effect.
"We are dedicated to delivering a graduation experience that honors the hard work and determination of our students," he concluded.
