The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has expressed concern over the increasing number of violent attacks on taxi drivers and is calling for mandatory registration of taxi operators to enhance safety measures for both drivers and passengers.

Speaking on the matter, PAZ National Coordinator Mr. Tafadzwa Goliati urged the Government to act urgently to curb the alarming trend.

"We are deeply concerned about the rise in violent attacks on taxi drivers, especially at night," Goliati said.

His comments follow a recent tragic incident in which a taxi driver was killed by unknown assailants in Harare's central business district.
Increased Vigilance Needed

As the festive season approaches—a period often associated with increased crime—PAZ has called for intensified security measures, including night patrols and stop-and-search operations, particularly during late hours when most of these attacks are reported.

"This should be an ongoing effort, especially during late hours when most of these attacks occur," Goliati said.
Safety Advice for Drivers

The association has also advised taxi drivers offering late-night services to exercise heightened vigilance and adopt additional safety precautions to protect themselves.

"Taxi operators should prioritise safety by being cautious about the passengers they pick up, especially in isolated areas," Goliati added.
Call for Government Intervention

PAZ's plea for mandatory taxi registration aims to ensure that all operators are accounted for, thereby discouraging criminal elements from infiltrating the sector. Collaborative efforts between the Government, law enforcement, and the transport sector were emphasised as crucial in addressing the issue.

The association hopes these measures will reduce the risks faced by taxi drivers and provide safer transport options for passengers.
