A trade union representative has found himself in the dock after being accused of stealing from the very workers he was meant to represent and protect.
Pardon Mangena (55), a member of the Zimbabwe Federation for Trade Unions (ZFTU), appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Beverly Madzikatire facing two charges of theft of trust property. The charges stem from an alleged incident where Mangena is accused of misappropriating funds intended for former workers of Marmic Private Limited.
Mangena, who has been a trusted representative of workers, is alleged to have betrayed their trust by diverting funds meant for his clients. According to the charges, on March 1, 2024, Mangena received US$1,800 from Willsgroove Farm Enterprises on behalf of Marmic Private Limited's former employees. This money was supposed to be distributed among the workers, but Mangena allegedly converted it for his own use instead.
The court heard that Mangena's fraudulent activities did not stop there. On May 10, 2024, he reportedly received an additional US$2,500 and US$800 from the same farm on behalf of the workers. The total amount allegedly stolen was US$5,100, which has not been recovered.
The alleged theft was reported to the police, leading to Mangena's arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded in custody until November 22, 2024, when his trial will continue.
The case has shocked the workers who rely on trade union representatives to advocate for their rights and protect their interests. Mangena's actions have raised concerns about trust and accountability within trade unions, which are supposed to safeguard the welfare of workers.
The Zimbabwe Federation for Trade Unions has yet to comment on the matter, but this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and responsibility in positions of trust. The outcome of Mangena's trial will likely have significant implications for the reputation of trade unions in the country.
