The Zimbabwean Government has intensified efforts to combat the smuggling and trade of counterfeit products that threaten public health and undermine the economy, Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu announced.

Minister Ndlovu highlighted that the influx of illegally imported goods - including baby formula, detergents, and other harmful substances - has been a persistent issue. However, measures are being implemented to shield consumers from potential harm and support the local manufacturing industry.

"We want to ensure that smuggled and counterfeit goods do not enter Zimbabwe this December. Our goal is to protect consumers from potential violations during this period," Minister Ndlovu said.

To curb the issue, the Government has deployed personnel to marketplaces and border points to crack down on the distribution of illicit products.

"We have declared war on counterfeit goods and are strengthening our institutions to tackle this issue effectively," he added, citing recent advancements in trade enforcement and regulatory measures.

Focus on Quality Standards

Looking forward, the minister underscored plans to enhance national quality infrastructure. This includes the implementation of compulsory standards as part of Zimbabwe's national quality policy to significantly curb the influx of substandard goods.

"This will significantly reduce the influx of counterfeit and substandard products, which are particularly prevalent during this season," Minister Ndlovu noted.

Hotspots and Challenges

The rise in smuggled goods is attributed to porous borders and the demand for cheaper alternatives. Urban areas, such as Mbare and downtown Harare, have become notorious hotspots where substandard goods are repackaged to mislead consumers.

Protecting Consumers and Local Industry

The Government's renewed focus aims to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of Zimbabwe's marketplace. These measures not only safeguard public health but also promote fair competition for local manufacturers during the peak holiday shopping season.

As the holiday season approaches, the Government has pledged to intensify its enforcement efforts, ensuring that consumers have access to safe, quality products while cracking down on those profiting from illegal trade.
