A 26-year-old inmate, Evidence Litwayi, has escaped from Kingstone Prison Farm in Bindura, sparking a manhunt by authorities.

Litwayi, from Manondo Village in Mt Darwin, was serving a 20-month sentence for unlawful entry and was expected to be released on May 3, 2025. He fled on November 20 at around 11 a.m. while working on a gardening assignment.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha confirmed the incident, explaining that Litwayi was among 12 inmates assigned to water the garden under the supervision of correctional officer Kelvin Kanjanda.

Escape Amid Routine Tasks

The group had been escorted to a maize field at the prison farm, where Litwayi was tasked with moving black poly-plastic pipes. Using the cover of the tall maize plants, he managed to slip away unnoticed.

"After five minutes, the other inmates noticed that Litwayi was missing and alerted the prison officer. Officer Kanjanda then informed his superiors, and a search team was immediately mobilized," Sergeant Major Chikasha said.

Despite an extensive search, Litwayi could not be located, prompting prison officials to report the incident to the police.

Manhunt Underway

Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance in locating the escapee. They have urged anyone with information on Litwayi's whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.

This escape has raised concerns about security protocols at correctional facilities, particularly for inmates involved in outdoor work assignments.

Public Caution

Police have cautioned residents in surrounding areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement has assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the fugitive.

Further updates will be provided as the search progresses.
