Zanu-PF crafts social media policy

The ruling Zanu-PF party is in the process of crafting a social media policy aimed at curbing the misuse of online platforms by its members. The initiative is designed to address issues such as disrespect towards party leadership, the spread of fake news, and activities that undermine party unity and cohesion.

This move comes in response to growing concerns over the use of social media for unsanctioned meetings, misinformation, and attacks on the party's leadership. Zanu-PF National Political Commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, confirmed in an interview yesterday that the policy is currently being developed and is expected to be implemented by early 2025.

"We believe that as early as January next year, we should have a policy in place to govern members' conduct in the social media space, particularly on WhatsApp groups," Machacha said. He acknowledged the rising trend of indiscipline among members who use their social media freedom to attack the leadership and spread false information.

"Members are taking advantage of the freedoms and the relaxed atmosphere in the party to abuse social media by posting lies, fake news, and even creating fictitious images using the latest technologies," he explained.

Machacha pointed out that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made it easier to spread misinformation and false narratives, further complicating the situation. "Social media has just gone crazy with the arrival of AI, and it has made it even easier to disseminate false narratives," he noted.

The proposed policy aims to ensure that social media remains a tool for positive communication and the promotion of the party's values. "We want members to understand the consequences of abusing these platforms. Social media should be used to share the party's message, not to spread negativity," Machacha emphasized.

Key features of the policy will include strict guidelines on the creation of party-affiliated WhatsApp groups. No such groups will be allowed without the approval of the provincial chairperson. The policy will also enable tracking of individuals who post messages that attack party leadership or undermine unity. Those found in violation will face disciplinary action in line with the party's constitution.

"The policy will facilitate the tracking of members who misuse social media to attack leadership or create divisions," said Machacha. "We will outline strict consequences for such members."

The introduction of this policy reflects Zanu-PF's commitment to maintaining internal discipline while adapting to the challenges posed by modern technology. The party aims to prevent the abuse of platforms like WhatsApp and ensure that they are used for constructive communication and advancing the party's objectives.

Machacha expressed optimism that the policy would be finalized and implemented by early next year. "We are working on it, and it will go through various approval stages. We hope that by January, we will have it in place," he said.

With this new policy, Zanu-PF is reinforcing the importance of unity and discipline within the party, ensuring that social media serves as a tool for advancing its goals and not for spreading divisiveness or misinformation. "Members should know that there are consequences when they abuse social media. This policy will help us address indiscipline and ensure effective communication aligned with the party's message," Machacha concluded.
