Miniyothabo Chiwenga steps into the spotlight with health initiative
8 hrs ago | Views
In what appears to signal a shift in power dynamics within Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga's wife, Miniyothabo Chiwenga, has launched a health clinic initiative in Filabusi. The programme, which mirrors the philanthropic activities of First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, provided free healthcare to over 100 patients and showcased Miniyothabo's growing public profile.
Under the banner of the Godlwayo Healthcare Outreach Initiative, Miniyothabo distributed spectacles, treated allergies, and facilitated surgeries for some patients. Addressing the community, she emphasized the importance of selfless service.
"What you can do for your neighbour, for your community, for your country is very important. We were taught to consider the next person. I decided to use the current position I am in to help those I can help," she said.
Accompanied by scarf-clad Zanu-PF officials, Miniyothabo was met with applause and enthusiasm, evoking parallels with Auxillia Mnangagwa's Angel of Hope Foundation, which has spearheaded similar initiatives across the country.
Observers noted that the event could mark Miniyothabo's entry into Zanu-PF's political and social arena, a space traditionally dominated by Auxillia Mnangagwa. The presence of the General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association, a group advocating for Vice President Chiwenga's potential 2028 presidential bid, further underscored the significance of the event.
"Miniyothabo's dedication to serving the people is both inspiring and transformative. This programme has brought much-needed healthcare to a community that has long struggled with access to basic services," said the association's secretary-general, Ntokozo Msipha.
The group praised her efforts as embodying leadership qualities associated with Chiwenga, including "empathy, service, and a commitment to nation-building." Plans are reportedly underway to expand the healthcare initiative to other provinces, potentially boosting Miniyothabo's influence.
The development comes amid intensifying factionalism within Zanu-PF over President Emmerson Mnangagwa's potential extension of power beyond 2028. While Mnangagwa's Masvingo province backers are pushing for a constitutional amendment to extend his term, Chiwenga's supporters are reportedly preparing to challenge such moves.
Miniyothabo's rising public presence could bolster Chiwenga's faction, positioning her as a key figure in the party's succession battles.
With her initiative drawing parallels to Auxillia Mnangagwa's approach, analysts believe Miniyothabo's Filabusi event is more than a philanthropic gesture - it signals her potential to shape future political dynamics in both Zanu-PF and Zimbabwe at large.
