Former Highlanders FC and Railstars FC striker Njabulo "Tshiki" Ncube, celebrated for his goal-scoring prowess, is now making headlines off the pitch for the wrong reasons. Ncube appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube on Wednesday, facing an assault charge after allegedly attacking his daughter's ex-boyfriend with a machete.
The 41-year-old pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody on US$100 bail. His trial is set to continue on December 9.
The charges stem from an altercation on October 14 in Mzilikazi suburb. According to court documents, Ncube's daughter had a physical confrontation with her ex-boyfriend, Malvin Banda, which ended with Banda reportedly overpowering her and assaulting her. Nursing injuries, the woman reported the incident to her father.
Fueled by rage, Ncube allegedly armed himself with a machete and went to confront Banda at his home. The confrontation escalated into an argument, during which Ncube is accused of attacking Banda multiple times with the machete. Banda reportedly sustained severe injuries, including deep cuts requiring 14 stitches.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, and the matter was reported to the police, leading to Ncube's arrest.
During the hearing, Ncube denied the charges, arguing that his actions were provoked by Banda's alleged assault on his daughter. Banda has not yet commented publicly on the incident.
The case has sparked debate in the community, with some condemning Ncube's alleged use of excessive force, while others sympathize with him for reacting to the reported abuse of his daughter.
As a former footballer and community figure, Ncube's actions have drawn widespread attention, casting a shadow over his reputation as a sportsman.
Further details are expected to emerge when the trial resumes next week.
