Former world boxing champion Charles Manyuchi has been ordered by the High Court to pay US$18,000 in damages after he was found guilty of having an adulterous affair with a young married woman he trained at his gym.
The ruling, issued last Tuesday by Justice Zisengwe, follows a default judgment in favor of Tapiwa Munyaka, the husband of the woman involved, Chengeto Viola Munyaka. The affair, which started in 2021, was discovered by Munyaka after he went through his wife's phone and found disturbing pictures and images of the intimate relationship between his wife and the boxer.
Munyaka, a regional manager with a microfinance bank in Masvingo, stated that the affair severely impacted his self-esteem and exposed him to sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, as Manyuchi and his wife did not use protection during their encounters. Munyaka also claimed that his marriage, which had been built over seven years, has since broken down due to the affair.
Ironically, Munyaka had been supportive of his wife's involvement in Manyuchi's training sessions, even taking her to the gym himself. Viola Munyaka, who was active in promoting Manyuchi's boxing matches, was one of the boxer's advertising models and accompanied him on trips to various resorts, including Kariba.
Munyaka's application to the court described how the affair had left him feeling “hurt and humiliated," with his reputation tarnished by the knowledge of his wife's infidelity. The court documents reveal that Manyuchi, who held multiple welterweight titles, recorded his sexual encounters with Chengeto, and the affair was widely known by Munyaka's colleagues, further damaging his self-image.
In the application, Munyaka sought US$50,000 in damages, with claims for US$30,000 for consortium (the emotional impact of the injury on their relationship) and US$20,000 for contumelia (insulting treatment). The court, however, awarded US$8,000 for consortium and US$10,000 for contumelia, bringing the total to US$18,000.
The affair reportedly began in 2021 when the Munyakas joined Manyuchi's training group. Munyaka claimed that Manyuchi selected his wife for advertising roles, eventually inviting her to various promotional trips under the guise of business, but it became clear that the true nature of their relationship was far more personal. Munyaka only discovered the affair towards the end of 2021.
In November 2022, Munyaka sent a letter of demand to Manyuchi, but received no response, prompting him to seek a default judgment. Despite the legal proceedings, Manyuchi did not offer any apology or compensation, indicating his indifference to the matter.
The case highlights the emotional and reputational toll of infidelity, especially in the public eye, and serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of reckless behavior in both personal and professional spheres. Manyuchi, once celebrated as a boxing champion, now faces a significant financial penalty for his actions.
