Welshman Ncube, acting president of the Sengezo Tshabangu-led faction of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has expressed his condolences to the family of the late Glen View South Member of Parliament, Grandmore Hakata, who passed away yesterday. Ncube described Hakata as a committed democrat, a gentle giant, and a dedicated community leader with a strong desire for development.

The cause of Hakata's death has not yet been disclosed. He made history by winning the Glen View South parliamentary seat in the August 2023 elections while being detained at Chikurubi Maximum Prison for allegedly holding an "unsanctioned rally."

In a statement released today, Ncube reflected on Hakata's significant contributions to Zimbabwe's political landscape, particularly his activism during the formative years of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Hakata also served as an opposition councillor in Mbare, marking a pioneering role for the opposition in Harare.

"Hon Grandmore Hakata was one of the first opposition activists in Harare in the formative years of the MDC, and consequently became one of the first opposition councillors in Harare, representing a ward in Mbare. He was a democrat who yearned for a better Zimbabwe for all citizens. He was a gentle giant, a brother, and a friend to many, a grassroots leader in the Glen View community," Ncube said in his message of condolence.

He extended his deepest sympathies to the Hakata family and the Glen View South constituency, acknowledging the profound loss of a leader who worked tirelessly for the welfare of his community.

CCC national spokesperson Willias Madzimure confirmed that mourners have gathered at House Number 1137, 10th Crescent, Glen View 1, Harare. Hakata is expected to be buried at his rural homestead in Landos, Chihota, though further details on the arrangements are yet to be released.

Former CCC Mt Pleasant MP, Fadzai Mahere, also paid tribute to Hakata, emphasizing his resilience and commitment to the fight for a better Zimbabwe.

"Hakata won the election from his jail cell. In Parliament, he stood tall and spoke up. His contribution to the fight for a better Zimbabwe will forever be remembered. He was a good one," Mahere wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

As the nation mourns the loss of a stalwart in the fight for democracy, Hakata's legacy as a champion for the people and his steadfast dedication to a better Zimbabwe are sure to leave a lasting impact.
