Zimbabweans urged to fight for their rights

Human rights defender Samuel Gwenzi has called on Zimbabweans to unite in the fight for their rights, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial to restoring citizens' dignity and securing a better future for all.

Gwenzi made these remarks on Monday while reflecting on the People's Human Rights Manifesto, which was released by ZimRights last year. He underscored that the nation's ongoing struggles, including a deteriorating health system, high unemployment, and rampant corruption, could only be addressed through a united effort from the citizens themselves.

"We need to go back to the basis of the Constitution… until we have a functioning health system in the country, until the youth acquire the necessary skills, and unemployment is eradicated," Gwenzi stated. "The persecutions may come today, but freedom will come as long as we work together and defend our country."

Gwenzi, who was recently granted bail by the High Court after being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly participating in a protest outside the Harare Magistrates Court, also highlighted the importance of restoring Zimbabweans' dignity.

"We need to restore the dignity of ourselves as Zimbabweans... That is possible if we fight for our rights," he said. "We need to bring back the sense of patriotism that exists, and that is possible if we fight for our rights."

The human rights defender emphasized that addressing key issues like improved service delivery and the eradication of corruption could only be achieved if citizens actively participated in pushing for change.

"No one but ourselves will ensure service delivery in Harare; no one but ourselves will ensure that the scourge of corruption will no longer exist," Gwenzi argued. "No one but ourselves will ensure education reaches every corner of Zimbabwe, where devolution stands to develop our communities, rather than a small clique."

Gwenzi's call for unity and collective action highlights the critical role of Zimbabwean citizens in driving the nation's transformation and safeguarding their rights.
