A truck driver who was found negligent in a road traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of six people has been sentenced to four years' imprisonment. Denny Taziva, 36, appeared before the Nyanga Magistrates Court this week facing charges of culpable homicide.

Taziva was convicted of negligence in multiple aspects of his driving, including excessive speed, failure to control the vehicle, and reckless driving. The court found that his actions contributed directly to the tragic loss of life.

The incident occurred on August 13, 2024, when Taziva was driving a Hino truck carrying 58 passengers along the Nyanga-Rwenya road. As he approached a steep descent near the Tangwena turn-off, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck veered off the road, causing it to overturn and throw passengers from the vehicle.

In the aftermath of the accident, four individuals were confirmed dead at the scene, and two more passed away at Nyanga District Hospital. Additionally, 50 others sustained various degrees of injuries, some of which were severe.

Along with the custodial sentence, the court also imposed a driving ban on Taziva, prohibiting him from operating any vehicle in the future. The ruling underscores the severity of the accident and the consequences of negligent driving.

The families of the victims have expressed their grief, while the court's decision serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.
