Through current capacity utilisation, the Mwenezi Mapfura/Marula processing plant in Rutenga (Masvingo Province) has recorded an export and product demand surge in regional and international trade, with mega rural industrialisation hub remaining excellent pocket for promotion of green economy.

Innovation and beneficiation has enabled the industrial plant to produce over 480,000 litres of wine annually with production by high-tech machines used having capacity to produce 80,000 litres within a couple of months.

Speaking during the Second Republic provincial projects profiling and media tour, Mr John Tanyaradzwa Machinya, brewer at Mapfura/Marula value addition factory has claimed that the plant has helped to complement rural industrialisation in Rutenga and other surrounding communities.

"Since its inception and launch, the plant has created jobs and development of ancillary industries, with communities being able to earn incomes through selling Marula fruit to the plant. It has also helped to transform the rural economy of Mwenezi," Machinya said.

"Some communities have also been subcontracted to harvest fruits and this plant was built as part of the country's industrialisation agenda. We are now able to produce 80,000 litres of wine within a period of two months, with some of the wine being packaged for local, regional and international trade where demand has been constantly increasing," Machinya said.

"Some end products including Mapfura/Amarula stones are used to make charcoal briskets and the carbon footprint is very low, hence they are eco-friendly. All activities, operations, processes and production stages at this place ensures that we adhere to eco-friendly prescriptions and are premised within the confines of promoting green economy," Machinya added.

Mwenezi District Development Coordinator, Mr Isaac Mutambara, has commended that communities have realised various benefits from value addition and beneficiation, while rural industrialisation has been a dream come true to them.

"We really appreciate the Second Republic for its development and empowerment initiatives which have transformed our district. Labour is provided at this place from hired from local communities hence employment is created. First preferences are given to communities from collecting fruits, delivering them, loading and offloading services," Mutambara said.

"There are several by-products/end-products which complement local dietary requirements, processing of stockfeeds, among others. Meanwhile, communities are benefiting from seedlings so that they plant more for sustaining the environment and constant supply for generations to come," Mutambara added.

Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira has praised the Second Republic for making sure investments prioritise locals while devolution remains the vehicle towards attainment of an upper-middle income economy by the year 2030 (Vision 2030).

"President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has made it a reality that communities have benefited from their local resources. It is through these investments, Public-Private Partnerships and other initiatives which he enrolled in various districts throughout the province which have transitioned communities into industrialized rural hubs," Chadzamira said.

"With his mantra of leaving no one and no place behind, Masvingo Province will certainly attain an upper-middle income economy by 2030. These projects are also making sure that they operate in an environment which prioritise empowerment of communities since some are planting trees, giving back communities and local schools as part of corporate social responsibilities, complementing government's initiatives and policies, among others," Chadzamira said.

"We are happy that some of the wine is exported to various countries in the region and international destinations. This will therefore aid in improving domestic, regional and international trade. Of note, these projects are transforming communities and this is a sign that President Mnangagwa is driven by action not talkshows," Chadzamira added.

The Marula-Mapfura plant was built at the instigation of the Second Republic that is placing innovation at the centre of the quest to achieve rural industrialisation.

The Mwenezi Mapfura Industrial Park is a processing and value-addition plant set up in response to calls by the Government for rural communities to benefit from locally available resources.

Mapfura/marula are used to produce juices, alcoholic beverages, edible oils and stock feeds which are currently being sold locally, regionally and internationally.
