Bedbugs infestation in Bulawayo not severe

The Bulawayo City Council has dismissed widespread social media claims of a severe bedbug infestation in the city, saying investigations revealed only two isolated cases and no evidence of a citywide outbreak.

This follows a series of online posts that alleged a bedbug surge in suburbs such as Nkulumane, Nketa, Njube, and Mpopoma, causing panic among residents and prompting calls for municipal intervention.

However, Town Clerk Christopher Dube reassured the public on Tuesday, stating that the situation had been exaggerated and was under control.

"The City of Bulawayo was first made aware of bedbug cases through social media around May 7, 2025, which alleged that there were bedbugs in Nketa, Nkulumane, Njube, and Mpopoma. The reports were false information," Dube said in a statement.

He confirmed that a follow-up investigation on June 9, following a new report involving Mpopoma, found evidence of bedbugs in only two households located in different high-density suburbs. "The level of bedbugs is not severe as only a few traces were noted," Dube clarified.

To address the issue, the municipality conducted fumigation at a property in Njube, spending US$47 on chemicals, while a private pest control company handled a separate case in Mpopoma.

Bedbugs are nocturnal parasitic insects that feed on human and animal blood. They typically hide in mattresses, furniture crevices, and even electrical outlets, and can spread rapidly through clothing, luggage, or second-hand furniture.

Despite the relatively minor presence detected, Dube said the city remains vigilant. "The local authority will continue to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to respond effectively should the need arise."

Residents have been urged to report any confirmed infestations to their local health offices for swift assistance.
