The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has successfully completed a 40-kilometre asphalt overlay on the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road, a major development hailed by residents and commuters for improving road safety and travel efficiency.

Announcing the milestone on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Wednesday, the ministry said the upgrade is part of its broader push to modernise Zimbabwe's road infrastructure and enhance durability.

"The completion of the 40km asphalt overlay on the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the country's road infrastructure," the statement read.

"Our teams are now finalising road markings to ensure clear traffic guidance and improved visibility."

The road, which had long been in a state of disrepair, has been a major concern for residents and motorists, particularly during the rainy season. Commuters have welcomed the development, praising the improved driving conditions and the anticipated boost to local commerce.

"This road was in a deplorable state and it's been a nightmare for us commuters. The new asphalt overlay will make a huge difference, especially during the rainy season," said Rumbidzai Moyo, a local resident.

She added that the finalisation of road markings would be crucial in ensuring safer travel, especially at night.

Tawanda Chikwanda, another resident, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the improved surface would ease the burden on drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles.

"The road was always a challenge. The upgrade will reduce the risk of accidents and make our journeys safer and more comfortable," he said.

The completion of the upgrade is also expected to stimulate economic activity in the Midlands Province, particularly by improving the movement of goods and services between Kwekwe, Gokwe, and surrounding areas.

The Kwekwe-Gokwe Road is a key transport link for farmers, traders, and transport operators, and the new overlay is likely to reduce vehicle maintenance costs and boost trade in the region.
