A secondary school teacher stationed at Hwata Secondary School has landed in trouble after being caught transporting eleven allegedly stolen cattle in his truck.

Tonhodzai Moses (36) was arrested at a roadblock in St Alberts, along with his driver, Nunurai Chizeya, on August 25 at around 10:00 AM. The arrest occurred at the Westbury turn-off along the Centenary–Muzarabani Road, during a police operation code-named "BATAI MBAVHA DZEMOMBE NEMBUDZI / BAMBANI AMASELA EZINKOMO LEMBUZI", aimed at combating livestock theft in the Mashonaland Central Province.

The pair was found in possession of 11 bovines - nine heifers and two cows - being transported in a white Hino Dutro 3-tonne truck, registration number AFZ 7307, owned by Moses.

Also onboard was a passenger identified as Ratidzo Magadzire of Kenwith Farm, Centenary. When police signaled the truck to stop, the driver was asked to produce ZRP Form 392 and an Animal Movement Permit. He presented documents that only partially matched the livestock on board.

  •  Form 392 (Serial No. 4555764) covered six animals: two cows, two heifers, one steer, and one calf - registered in the name of the second accused.
  •  Form 392 (Serial No. 4499994) listed two cows under the name of Ratidzo Magadzire.
  •  The Animal Movement Permit No. 462810S, issued to Moses, listed five heifers, four cows, two calves, one steer, and one bull, destined for Beatrice Farm.

Upon verification, only two heifers on board matched the descriptions in the clearance forms. The rest of the cattle were unaccounted for in the documents, raising suspicion of theft.

Police instructed Acts Munyoro to drive the truck to ZRP St Alberts Post for further investigation. However, before arriving, Moses took control of the vehicle and drove it approximately 200 meters off-road in a south-easterly direction. He lost control, veered off the road, and crashed into a stub tree. The truck sustained minor damage to the front fender and radiator; Moses was unharmed.

Upon arrival at the police station, Moses implicated two other individuals: Denis Matavire (23) and another suspect identified only as Munyori.

All three suspects are currently in custody and have since appeared before the Guruve Magistrates' Court, where they were denied bail.
