Japan has endorsed Zimbabwe's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, becoming the latest country to throw its weight behind Harare's candidature.

The pledge of support was conveyed by Japan's Speaker of Parliament, Mr Fukushiro Nukaga, to his Zimbabwean counterpart, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, who is in Tokyo on an official visit as part of parliamentary diplomacy.

In a statement yesterday, the Parliament of Zimbabwe confirmed that Speaker Nukaga had expressed Japan's "unambiguous support" for Zimbabwe's bid.

"In a show of confidence in Zimbabwe and an epitome of the visit, the host Speaker expressed unambiguous support for Zimbabwe's bid for the non-permanent seat in line with the Japanese government's position on the same," the statement read.

Speaker Nukaga further advised that Japan's Foreign Ministry had pledged "unequivocal support" for Harare's candidature, aligning with Zimbabwe's foreign policy principle of being "a friend to all and an enemy to none," as championed by President Mnangagwa.

President Mnangagwa launched Zimbabwe's UNSC campaign earlier this month. If successful, Zimbabwe would serve on the council for the third time, following previous stints in 1983–1984 and 1991–1992.

Japan's endorsement adds to firm commitments already secured from China, Russia, India, Cuba and Palestine, as well as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).

During the visit, Adv Mudenda and Speaker Nukaga also agreed to strengthen parliamentary cooperation by establishing a Zimbabwe–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association. The initiative will facilitate exchanges between the two legislatures, particularly in areas such as digitalisation of parliamentary processes and legislative efficiency.

The Speakers further underscored the importance of expanding economic ties and fostering people-to-people exchanges, with tourism, cultural cooperation and participation in international platforms cited as key opportunities. Zimbabwe's upcoming participation in Expo 2025 Osaka and President Mnangagwa's attendance at both the expo and the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) were highlighted as milestones in bilateral relations.

To conclude the visit, Adv Mudenda extended an invitation to Speaker Nukaga to make a reciprocal visit to Zimbabwe-a gesture which was warmly accepted.
