Two men, including a Chinese national, were robbed of more than US$120,000 by bogus police officers in Harare on Friday.

The victims, identified as Danver Gumbo (31) and Zhou Long (53) of Dongxin Mining Machinery, were handcuffed and dispossessed of cash and other valuables during the incident.

The pair, who are based in Kadoma, had travelled to Harare to make payment for mining equipment shipped from China when they were intercepted by four men wearing police reflector jackets. The bogus officers demanded to see their permits before assaulting them and driving them to an undisclosed location.

They were left handcuffed to seatbelts in the vehicle until a motorist who had suffered a breakdown nearby came to their aid and assisted them in reporting the matter at a police station.

Although national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment, sources confirmed that the case was reported at Marimba Police Station under RRB 6628859. The total value of the property and money stolen was US$122,070.

Police investigations into the robbery are said to be underway.
