The long-running Chirumanzu chieftainship wrangle has taken a fresh turn, with the High Court in Harare setting Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as the date for hearing the matter.

In the application, Julius Chimbi cited Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Daniel Garwe, the Midlands Provincial Chiefs Assembly, and Abraham Nyamande as respondents.

"Take notice that the above court application will be heard and determined physically by the High Court of Zimbabwe at Harare before Honourable Mrs Justice Mungwari on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 1100 (hours) or so soon thereafter as counsel may be heard," the official notice stated.

Chimbi is challenging the nomination of Nyamande as Chief Chirumanzu, arguing that both Garwe and the Midlands Provincial Chiefs Assembly failed to act as neutral adjudicators in the selection process.

Garwe, however, previously defended the process, insisting that due procedure was followed. He explained that the Nherera house was the last to provide a chief — the late Chief Gerald Mudzengi — and, in keeping with the principle of rotation, it was now the Simba house's turn to assume the chieftainship.

Chimbi disputes this position, citing minutes from meetings held in October 2020, which recorded that both the Nherera and Mutizirapi houses had agreed to select him, Julius Chimbi Chigegwe, as the rightful heir to the throne.

He argues that the Nherera house has historically had fewer chances at the chieftainship and, for the sake of fairness, nominated him as the next Chief Chirumanzu.

The High Court ruling is expected to provide clarity in a dispute that has divided traditional structures in the Midlands province.
