A Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) driver has avoided jail time after being convicted of negligent driving that resulted in the death of a cyclist, but had his Class One licence cancelled.

Thandani Mahlangu (42) appeared before Hwange Magistrates Court facing charges of negligent driving and culpable homicide. He was ordered to pay a fine of US$400 or serve six months in prison if he defaults. The court also prohibited him from driving for 24 months and cancelled his Class One licence.

According to the State, the fatal accident occurred on September 17, 2025, around 7pm along the Cross Dete-Binga road. Mahlangu, who was driving a ZUPCO Dragon bus, struck one of two cyclists at the 85-kilometre peg in Simwemwe village. The victim died on the spot.

Investigations revealed that Mahlangu had been speeding and failed to maintain a proper lookout while driving, leading to the tragic incident.

In a statement after sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities linked to negligent driving. It urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads to help save lives.

"The needless loss of lives due to negligence must stop," the NPAZ said, stressing that stricter adherence to road safety regulations is essential to reversing the disturbing trend.
