A 38-year-old man set off alarm bells after forgetting his gun at a lodge where he had spent the night.
The man, Simbarashe Ruwocha of Unit O, Chitungwiza, appeared before Chitungwiza Magistrates' Court charged with negligent handling of a firearm after he left his gun behind at a local lodge.
Presiding magistrate Batsirai Madzingira convicted Ruwocha, who is self-employed, and fined him US$200, or alternatively five months in prison if he fails to pay.
The court heard that on August 31 this year, Ruwocha booked a room at Mukanya Lodge in Makoni, Chitungwiza, where he forgot his CZ V20 pistol, serial number 324097, which was loaded with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition.
Prosecutor Shamiso Charmaine Mwapangira told the court that the matter came to light on September 1 at around 7 a.m., when Ruwocha checked out of the lodge leaving the firearm under the bed.
A lodge employee, Yeukai Mudimu, who was cleaning the room, discovered the weapon and immediately alerted the police, who came and seized it.
Investigations confirmed that the firearm belonged to Ruwocha, leading to his arrest.
The gun was produced in court as evidence, and Ruwocha pleaded guilty without any resistance.
