Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) players Reuben Mhlanga and Abbas Amidu have been denied bail after appearing before a Kwekwe magistrate on Tuesday facing drug trafficking charges.

The duo was arrested last week following a police tip-off that a significant consignment of drugs was being transported through the town. They are accused of masterminding the trafficking of cannabis (dagga) valued at approximately US$750,000, which was seized by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

The former footballers, who once turned out for top-flight clubs including Dynamos and Caps United, are expected to remain in custody as investigations continue.

In a separate case, a patient's hospital stay took an unexpected twist when Taona Dzimbo (40) was arrested at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital for stealing copper pipes.

Dzimbo, who had been admitted with a fractured leg, was caught vandalising examination lights and attempting to remove copper fittings from the facility. Police recovered 45 pieces of copper pipe, each about 20 centimetres long, along with an aluminium pipe hidden in his hospital locker.

He remains under police guard at the hospital pending further investigations.
