MASVINGO – Zimbabwe's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development has ramped up its push for gender equality in road construction, with Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco urging contractors to ensure equal opportunities for women on site.

Speaking during a media tour of the Masvingo-Beitbridge road construction project, Sacco emphasized the ministry's commitment to inclusive development.

"Let me make it clear and stress that contractors must provide equal opportunities for both male and female workers, ensuring women are not excluded from traditionally male-dominated roles," Sacco said.
"We want to see women operating heavy machinery and leading construction teams."

Masimba Holdings Limited, the contractor overseeing the Mucheke River Bridge, reported that the project is now 88% complete - a key milestone in efforts to decongest Masvingo's urban centre and surrounding suburbs.
Engineer Joy Makumbe, Permanent Secretary in the Transport Ministry, echoed Sacco's sentiments.

"Women bring unique perspectives and skills to the table. It's time we recognise and harness their potential fully," Makumbe said.
"An inclusive workplace boosts productivity and innovation. With the completion of this bridge, traffic flow into and out of Masvingo will improve significantly, complementing the ease of doing business."

Masimba Holdings Contract Manager, Engineer Malvern Mnemo, confirmed that women have played a vital role in the bridge's construction.

"As you may witness at this section, we have some women who are hardworking. The Mucheke River Bridge is now at 88% completion level. We expect full completion and traffic opening by November," Mnemo said.

Workers on site praised the ministry's gender-inclusive approach.
Joyce Mazorodze-Chidziwo (35) said the initiative has empowered women in a traditionally male-dominated field.

"This has enabled us to show the world that we also have access to equal employment opportunities. We welcome the Ministry's efforts to make gender equality a reality rather than rhetoric," she said.

Virginia Zongo (40) added that the opportunities have transformed livelihoods.

"These jobs have allowed us to support our families and contribute to economic growth through equal employment access," Zongo said.

In Harare, Transport Minister Felix Mhona reiterated the ministry's commitment to diversity during a visit to the Mabvuku Interchange construction site.

"Promoting gender equality in road construction can significantly impact Zimbabwe's infrastructure development. By tapping into a broader talent pool, we enhance efficiency and outcomes," Mhona said.

Zimbabwe continues to invest in major infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway - a key corridor for trade and mobility.
