Mwonzora battles fresh MDC revolt

Douglas Mwonzora, leader of MDC-T, is facing mounting pressure after provincial chairpersons passed a vote of no confidence, citing mismanagement and loss of direction within the opposition party.

The meeting, held last Sunday at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (MRT) House in Harare, was chaired by national chairman Solomon ‘Sox' Chikohwero and brought together provincial chairpersons from across the country. Mwonzora did not attend, reportedly attending a funeral in Nyanga, and sent an apology via the chair.

Minutes of the meeting, seen by The Standard, show the chairpersons expressed frustration over Mwonzora's leadership style, including centralising power, neglecting party structures, and failing to notify them of planned national council meetings.

Manicaland provincial chairperson David Tekeshe said the MDC-T had lost its appeal under Mwonzora, contrasting it with former leader Nelson Chamisa's ability to energise supporters. "The fish head is rotten, making the entire fish unpleasant," the minutes read.

Leaders from Harare and Midlands provinces echoed the sentiment, accusing the leadership of creating confusion, ignoring resolutions, and failing to rejuvenate party structures. Some highlighted the unclear status of party vehicles purchased from South Africa ahead of the 2023 elections and the disillusionment of grassroots supporters.

Mwonzora took over MDC-T in 2021 following a court ruling granting him control of the MDC Alliance name, assets, and headquarters. His tenure has been marked by financial troubles, legal battles, and internal divisions, which prompted Nelson Chamisa to form the CCC.

Chikohwero confirmed the meeting but noted that the minutes have not yet been officially adopted. "The president is meeting the provincial chairpersons to respond to these issues. The minutes are internal documents, not official," he said.

Efforts to reach Mwonzora for comment were unsuccessful. The MDC-T leader has survived previous ouster attempts by former top lieutenants, including Thokozani Khupe, Morgen Komichi, and Elias Mudzuri, who accused him of personalising power.
