A night of drinking ended in tragedy at Uroi Business Centre in Tengwe when a man was fatally stabbed while trying to protect a bar attendant from harassment by his drinking mate.

The deceased, Gift Chikwari (34) of Matambura Village under Chief Mujinga, died after being stabbed by Isau Gakata (34), who allegedly has a history of mental illness.

According to police, the two men were among patrons enjoying beer at a local joint when Gakata began harassing a 29-year-old female bar attendant, claiming she was his ex-wife who had left him four years ago. Gakata reportedly insisted on reconciling with her, leading to a heated argument.

Chikwari tried to intervene and stop Gakata from harassing the woman, but the situation quickly turned violent. Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the incident, saying Gakata drew a kitchen knife from his satchel and stabbed Chikwari once in the chest.

"The bar owner took Chikwari to Chivende Clinic, where he died upon admission," said Insp Kohwera.

Police later arrested Gakata, who is now facing murder charges.

Meanwhile, Insp Kohwera also revealed that police in Chinhoyi are investigating a separate murder case after the body of an unknown man was discovered near the town park.

"The body was found lying face up in a pool of blood on September 12, 2025, around 6am," he said.

A vendor who came across the body on her way to a nearby shop reported the matter to police.

Insp Kohwera appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the deceased or assist in the investigation to contact the nearest police station.
